Sri Lankan Navy rescues 100 Rohingya Muslims from drowning

The Sri Lankan Navy has rescued more than 100 Rohingya Muslims who drowned in the Indian Ocean.

According to a foreign news agency, 102 Rohingya Muslims, including 25 children, have been transferred to the eastern port of Trunk Mali in Sri Lanka.

The 102 Rohingya Muslims, including 25 children, were traveling from war-torn Myanmar to Sri Lanka when their boat capsized.

Fishermen reported the trawler drifting off Sri Lanka’s northern coast early Thursday morning near Milwayekel and informed the Navy.

A Navy spokesman said the rescued people would be medically examined before being allowed to return home.

The Muslim-majority ethnic Rohingya face widespread persecution in Myanmar and thousands risk their lives every year on the long sea journey, most of them to southeast Malaysia or Indonesia.
